HOT
WATER HEATING
Diesel fired water heaters 12 or 24 volts
Warm water heating operates much the same way
as a domestic central
heating boiler. The hot water
is distributed through
the boat to heat radiators, or
blower boxes and hot
water via a calorifier. They
require a header tank
fitted at the highest part in the
system to ensure there is
a continuous water supply.
Blower boxes are similar
to a car heater. They have a water matrix on the back and a fan
blows the warm air out. They can be ducted to several different
areas from one box. When using a calorifier to heat water they are
very cost effective.
ADVANTAGES
1.
Can also heat domestic water (via calorifier)
2.
Quieter - there
is no air blowing in cabin
3. More effective than warm air heating for larger
boats
that have a longer run
4. Can be used for water only in summer
5. Radiators can also be used or drying towels or
damp clothes
6. Does not need outside
air to operate
DISADVANTAGES
1. Initially
more complicated to install
2. Some maintenance of system required ie. Top up
water and bleed
system
3. Not so popular with sailing boats as there is
usually very little space to
fit radiators and blower boxes all use more
DC power. Power
consumption can be a problem on sailing boats
4. Some level of plumbing skills are required to install
